Magazine Review

While there were several appealing and informative articles in this edition of the Black Ph.D. /Eed. D. magazine, the article I instantly connected with was the one that addressed the question: What annoys you and how do you react? Dr. Tracey D. Moore was quite straightforward in expressing her concerns that our youth, young adults and the not so young are not taking advantage of educational opportunities. I too, share this sentiment. I have often wondered why, we have young people not committing to or even planning goals. I have surmised this is due in part to a lack of understanding of personal purpose. When a person, young or old, does not understand personal purpose, abuse is inevitable. There is no sadder scenario than that of self- abuse.
How do I react? I teach. Not only from an educational perspective, but I also teach from the social and spiritual perspective, as well. By so doing, I teach the necessity of individually and collectively addressing questions of this nature using a holistic approach. It is then we will better understand ourselves and others. Until we understand who we are and why we are or our purpose, we will never appreciate and take advantage of systematic educational opportunities set in place. These and other topics/questions and articles of this caliber, must be posed to people, (especially people of color) on a consistent basis in order to facilitate individual thought processes. We, as Dr. Moore stated, “Must actively seek to empower people and raise their awareness.” It is my belief this will be attained through ones ability to empower people to “think outside the box." Failure to reach the core of ones thoughts through self-evaluation will result in the demise of ones untapped potential, whether from a youth, young adult or a not so young prospective.
